Single use plastic ban - are you ready?
Rewind back to January 2023, the government announced an introduction ban on the sale and supply of specific single - use plastics from a variety of businesses. These businesses include catering outlets, hospitality venues, retailers and many more. The ban on ‘single - use’ plastics is already in place in Scotland and Northern Ireland and will come into effect in England from 1st October 2023.
The term ‘single use’ means the item is only intended to be used once, for a specific purpose, such as a plastic fork or spoon for eating then thrown away.
Although the UK has already taken action to try to tackle plastic waste, the current policies do not address the huge challenge we need to tackle plastic waste so the government feels further bans would make a further impact for change.
Evidence also shows that single use plastic items are commonly found littered, ending up having a drastic impact on our wildlife both on land and in our oceans. Most are also not currently recyclable so therefore the problem of waste magnifies.
Banned items will include -
Plastic disposable cutlery including CPLA
Expanded polystyrene (Foam) Food containers (Takeaway containers, plates and bowls)
Expanded polystyrene (Foam) EPS cups
